The three days of Fasching are known in Germany as the “crazy days” that turn cities into witches’ cauldrons every year. Known as one of the largest folk festivals in Germany and one of the largest carnivals in the world, the celebration dates back to a time where winter exorcism, followed by a lavish feast and celebration afterwards was still a common practice.
Today, join us on a tour into the core of Carnival, to the town of Cologne and celebrate what Germans fondly refer to as the “Fifth Season”. The celebration lasts from Weiberfastnacht (Women’s Shrovetide) to Fat Tuesday and will turn Cologne in a state of party. Beer will flow in streams and from every pub in town the party cry “Kölle Alaaf” will be heard followed by a firm “Prost”.
Today's highlight is the colorful Carnival Parade of about 12000 “Jeck’en” that slowly makes it’s way through downtown Cologne. The Parade is accompanied by Brass Bands, musicians, dancers and followers. An estimated 300 tons of chocolate & candy will fly through the air making cheering revelers dance with joy and anticipation.
After the Parade, dive in to the After Parade Celebrations at various pubs and bars or remain in the streets to continue on celebrating.
