Today we journey to the northern part of the Rheinland-Pfalz into the Vulkaneifel (Volcanic-Eifel), a region similar to Yellowstone, made up of a large cluster of sleeping volcanoes. Although there has not been an eruption since 10,930 BC, volcanic activity can still be observed here, including the identification of over 350 individual volcano throats, 70 oval craters, rare fresh water geysers and many acidified springs. Local brew masters have combined the natural elements of the Vulkaneifel with the finest raw ingredients to craft a beer of award winning flavor and finish. Today we will explore a beer and brewery that is on the bucket list of serious beer connoisseurs the world over!
Our Vulkan Brewery Tour begins with a 98 foot (153 steps) decent underground, taking us into the deepest beer storage and fermentation cellar in the world. While exploring this subterranean labyrinth we will learn how natures elemental forces and the volcanic eruption that created the nearby crater lake are all interconnected to create this one-of-a-kind tasty brew! We will also learn about the artisan process, passion and creativity that has fueled the success of Vulkan Beer. After working up a thirst ascending from the maze, it is time to be rewarded with a thorough tasting of these award winning suds, followed by a hearty brewery lunch.
Next, we continue our adventure with a visit to the popular town of Koblenz, world famous for its unique location at the confluence of Germany’s two largest rivers, affectionately referred to as “Mother Moselle” and “Father Rhine.” The town, surrounded by vineyards, old castles and massive strongholds offers a unique charm and warm atmosphere. There will be free time here to explore at your leisure, enjoy a cable car ride across the river up to the fortress of Ehrenbreitstein, stroll through town or perhaps relax in one of the many beer gardens along the Rhine River.
