Today we experience the old-world magic and romance of the Alsace region of France. Our day begins at the French Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg, a Castle proudly overlooking the famous Alsatian vineyards. From here you have the most amazing view over the bordering region of Germany, the Rhine River Valley all the way to the foot hills of the Black Forrest.
Built in the 12th century, the castle has been a constant witness of conflicts and rivalry between Countries, Kings and Emperors, was besieged and pillaged and burned down to desolation during the thirty-year war. Abandoned and left in ruins for many centuries, the rebuilding process of the ancient castle ruins did not start until the 16th century. Finally, in the 19th century the Haut-Koenigsbourg was restored to the glorious mountain fortress it once was, making it the perfect first stop of our day.
Filled with history and beautiful pictures in tow, we continue on to Colmar, the pearl of the Alsatian region. Colmar is a charming town filled with traditional half-timbered houses nestled together in the most beautiful way, intertwined with quaint canals and wonderfully decorated bridges and window sills. As one of the largest cities in the Alsatian region, Colmar enchants with lovely little stores, typical French delicacies such as Tarte Flambée and exceptionally good local wines.
After ample free time we set out to our final destination, the medieval town of Eguisheim, considered to be one of the top ten most beautiful towns in the French Alsace region. Encircled by the most famous vineyards the town has been used as back drop for more than a view scenes of Disney’s “The beauty and the Beast” movie.
The streets of the medieval village center run like concentric circle, you can follow the suggested routs or stroll randomly through the charming cobble stone streets passing beautifully blooming windowsills awarded many times over. Eguisheim is home to a number of renowned Alsatian wine makers so it seems only natural to suggest to stop and have a taste and perhaps even buy a few local souvenirs before it is time to return.
