This trip is a perfect opportunity to combine some fresh air sightseeing, medieval fun and a dinner party with a group of friends, all in a 1000-year-old venue where local knights once feasted.
Our day begins with a direct travel to the beautiful Mosel Valley through some of the country’s most picturesque landscapes and most productive wine regions. As we are descending into the River valley, we stop right above the Reichsburg Castle, where there is this perfect spot for the first and particularly unobstructed glimpse and the only place to get a photograph from a birds eye view with the castle revealing all its glory. Upon arrival in Cochem, a walking tour of the town is offered by your tour guide, providing a chance to enjoy history at its most beautiful as we stroll by half-timbered buildings, along cobble stone streets and historical wells in this picturesque town.
After our group exploration the of sites and history of the town, enjoy some free time to shop and wander this beautiful place independently. Perhaps check out the oldest mustard mill, established in 1810, or stop at one of the countless wine places for a tasting (not included), before we come back together and continue the adventure as a group, to our main event. Cochem Castle, formerly known as Castle Burg Reichsburg, is perched high above the town, picturesquely framed by the valley of age-old vineyards sloping down to the lazy curving Mosel River. The ancient fortress is over 1000 years old and proclaimed by local lore to be the original “Sleeping Beauty” castle.
Upon arrival we will be given an orientation tour of this magnificent castle, getting a unique behind the scenes perspective into life at a castle before we will dig into a festive medieval-style dinner in our private Knight’s Dining Hall. This tasty regional meal features rye bread with schmaltz spread, beef soup, a turkey leg, flat bread, cheese, nuts and grapes. One glass of wine will be served in a souvenir wine mug (additional wine, beer and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase). We will be entertained throughout the meal with bawdy stories about medieval times, table manners and enjoy live entertainment before the Knight’s Games begin after dinner.
